In a previous life, I did a few reviews for community-made modules for the Neverwinter Nights series of video games. I still feel that the fact that the developers included a fully-functioning, reasonably intuitive toolset is the reason why a game that felt dated in look and feel even when it was new is still selling today.
Techdirt has a nice article that agrees with the sentiment.
